Jan Carol
Jacobo
Oct 3, 1951 — May 28, 2026
Jan Carol Buchanan Jacobo, of Laurel, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at South Central Regional Medical Center. She was 74 years old. Born on October 3, 1951, in Midland, Texas. Jan lived a life marked by generosity, resilience, and a deep, unwavering love for the people around her.
Jan will be remembered for her welcoming friendship and her steadfast dedication to her family. She never hesitated in helping a friend, offer a meal, babysit, or share whatever she had. She gave her heart, her resources, and her joy freely to everyone who crossed her path.
Even during her time in the ICU, Jan continued to bring laughter and light. Her family shared an impromptu taco party at her bedside, followed the next night by an early birthday celebration complete with chocolate cake. She loved food of all kinds and was never afraid to try something new.
In 1987, Jan moved to Mississippi to be closer to family. She worked at Howard Industries for many years, supporting her children as a single mother. Later in life, she worked alongside her sister in childcare, pouring her love and patience into the little ones she cared for.
Jan embraced life with curiosity and humor. She loved attending Mardi Gras with her family. She tried horseback riding in her 50s deciding quickly that it wasn’t her passion and went ziplining with her friend Lorianne in her late sixties. She delighted in surprising her grandchildren with her modern phrases, especially her playful, “Do you luv me?”
Jan was preceded in death by her father, Columbus John Buchanan; her mother, Mary Alice Buchanan; and her brother, Ronald Ned Buchanan.
She is survived by her children, Moises Jacobo (Laura) and Kelli Anderson (Mike); her grandchildren, Emily Burris (Jared), Lakelyn Rosas (Rob), Sadie Raye Camp (Gray), TJ Braddock (Kennedie), and Connor Jacobo; and her great‑grandchildren, James Elliot Hertzler, Emberlyn Alice Burris, Kullen Jack Braddock, and Baby Rosas on the way. She is also survived by her sister, Gail Smith (Gary), and her brother, Michael Buchanan. All of them will hold her memory close to their hearts.
Jan’s presence will be deeply missed, and her legacy of welcoming generosity, love, compassion, and strength will continue to live on in all who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Colonial Chapel of Laurel from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM.
