Silas Lafayette Walters, 83 of Laurel, MS passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at his residence in Laurel, MS. He was born Sunday, July 28, 1940, in Laurel, Mississippi.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 15, 2024, from 9:30AM until 11:00AM at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Laurel. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 15, 2024, at 11:00AM at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Laurel in Laurel, MS. Burial will follow in Myrick Cemetery in Laurel, Mississippi. Bro. Rory Dill will officiate. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Laurel is in charge of arrangements. 601-649-3342.
Lafayette graduated from Myrick School in May of 1959. In December of 1959, he joined the Army National Guard completing basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. While in the National Guard, Lafayette entered and graduated from Jackson Barber College in Jackson, MS. He was awarded an honorable discharge from the National Guard in 1964. While working as a full-time, self-employed barber, Lafayette married Ellen Faye Wimberly on September 11, 1965. Their first son Stacey Eugene was born September 30, 1968. Their second son, Stewart Andrew was born September 21, 1969.
While barbering and owning a chicken farm, Lafayette started working with the Jones County Beat 3. Lafayette worked for Jones County Beat 3 from 1979 until retiring in 2003.
Lafayette was a member of the Masons for many years.
He was preceded in death by his father, Silas Walters; mother, Phronia Davis Walters; brother, Max Walters.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Wimberly Walters, sons, Stacey Walters (Jacquelyn) and Stewart Walters (Juanita); grandchildren, Chase Reeves, Brice Reeves (Taylor), Erin Westbrook (David), Emily Jefcoat (Dalton) and Elana Walters; great grandchildren, Gunner Reeves, Emery Reeves, Ava Reeves and Leland Reeves; nephew, Steven Walters (Hanna); niece, Sybille Pippen (Phillip).
Pallbearers will be Dalton Jefcoat, Rusty Nix, Phil Dickerson, Ethan Wimberly, Brice Reeves, and Chase Reeves.
Honorary pallbearers will be Gabe Fields.
