Obituary

Ruby Jean Mauldin of Laurel died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at the age of 96.

Ruby Jean treasured her family and her many friends. She was always thrilled with a visitor or phone call. She loved a party, a game of cards, and spending time with her late-husband, Billie Mauldin, and friends at their fishing camps. She wasted little and found value and joy in relationships over material possessions. She had a sweet, dry wit and a way of making people smile and feel so very special.

She was married to Billie, the love of her life, for 69 years. The love, respect and care Ruby Jean and Billie showed to each other and to their friends and family is an example of how we all should treat each other.

Ruby Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Billie; sons, Harry and Mitch Mauldin; and daughter-in-law, Annette Mauldin. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Susan Walters; brothers, Edward and Rudolph Walters; sister, Virginia Sumrall; and beloved cousins, Floyd and Madeline Clearman and Maxine Goodenough.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Scott Mauldin of Laurel, Megan Leake (Hunter) of Madison, Shuff Mauldin (Millie) of Laurel, and Kate Embry (Case) of Oxford; daughter-in-law Patty Mauldin Anthony (Joe) of Laurel; and great-grandchildren, Davis and Alice Leake, Harry and Ruby-Jean Embry, and Mitch Mauldin. She is also survived by her dear nieces, Carmen Cole (Douglas), Debbie Lengfield, Stephanie Taylor, Christie Pickering, and Barbara Holt (David); cousins, Dot and Jim Parrish; and nephew, Kevin Sumrall.

She was a member of West Laurel Baptist Church and faithful viewer of the First Baptist Television Ministry.

John Helveston will officiate a graveside service on Saturday, October 28 at 10 am at Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, West Laurel Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Laurel, or the charity of your choice.
